In 2018, the pair linked up for the first time for The Favourite, a period black comedy that became an unexpected success.
“One day while we were shooting a scene outside in the garden, I said, ‘What is this movie and what is it gonna be? Yorgos shrugged and said, ‘I don’t know,’ so that was pretty much how much I knew about what was happening around me. But I trusted that it was all gonna come together,” Stone said of her first experience with trusting Lanthimos.
The Favourite netted over $95 million at the global box office. The financial success is great, sure, but the film also garnered universal acclaim. Further, Stone received a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the Oscars.
Their first picture was dynamic, but things reached a fever pitch with 2023’s Poor Things, a brilliant work that boasts elements of comedy, drama, and horror.
Once again, the pairing of Stone and Lanthimos achieved critical and commercial success, and Stone walked away with the Best Actress prize at the Academy Awards.
In an interview with Variety, Stone talked about how Lanthimos aided in her bringing Bella to life.
“It was just a gradual comfort with it. I could talk to Yorgos about it, and we were able to discover as we went. And because it’s a safe environment, it doesn’t feel rushed. His sets don’t feel like, “Oh, we have to get this, and we’ve got to move on, even though I don’t want to.” Or at least he doesn’t communicate that to us,” she said.
Prior to Poor Things changing the game for the duo, they made a short film called Bleat, which had a small release.
“I said yes immediately, as always,” Stone said of being asked to do the short film.
In 2024, Stone and Lanthimos’ third film, Kind of Kindness, will be getting a wide release.
“The common denominator of the things I’ve been a part of are that they’re things I want to watch. That’s the only gauge that I have. If it’s not something that I would be like, ‘I gotta go see this the day it comes out,’ then it’s probably not a good fit for me,” Stone said of her movies with Lanthimos.

“A day after his latest film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, Yorgos Lanthimos’ new film has been announced. The director will helm Bugonia, starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, who lead his latest movie Kinds of Kindness,” The Hollywood Reporter write.
Kind of Kindness is getting some solid early reviews, and over time, Jesse Plemons has become one of Hollywood’s most talented actors. Joining forces with Stone and Lanthimos for another project is a dream come true for film fans.
Aside from the big three names that we have touched on, there has been serious talent involved with adapting this feature for American audiences.
“Bugonia is based on the 2003 South Korean sci-fi comedy, Save the Green Planet, with the English-language version developed by Miky Lee’s CJ ENM with Midsommar director Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen at Square Peg,” The Hollywood Reporter added.
With Stone and Plemons opting to work with Lanthimos once more, it’s clear that the director knows what he’s doing, and that he is great to work with.
