Mel Gibson joins John Wick prequel miniseries The Continental as a vicious crime boss threatening the hotel for assassins in new trailer

Mel Gibson made his debut in the John Wick universe with the first trailer for his upcoming prequel miniseries The Continental.

In the video, released Wednesday, the iconic star makes a chilling entry as a dangerous crime boss who has just had a precious possession stolen.

The show, which was inspired by the John Wick films starring Keanu Reeves, takes place decades earlier in the 1970s and apparently blends some of New York City‘s real-life crises from that decade with the fictional battles among assassins staying at the eponymous hotel.

Although Gibson is the top-billed star, the show appears to be focused on a young Winston Scott, played in the films by Ian McShane and portrayed here by Colin Woodell.

Gibson is introduced early in the trailer as he delivers a threatening monologue.

Bad guy? Mel Gibson’s crime boss character Cormac was revealed in the first railer for the John Wick prequel miniseries The Continental on Wednesday

Revenge: The iconic actor plays a kingpin who threatens to go to war with young Winston (Colin Woodell) after his brother Frankie steals something valuable from him

‘This sacred institution wields power beyond your imagination,’ he says in voiceover, seemingly referring to the Continental as the camera roams through the hotel for assassins.

‘Winston, your brother stole something from me,’ he says, addressing the future hotel manager as he’s seen on screen for the first time.

Gibson wears a black pin ᵴtriƥe suit with wide lapels and a red polka-dotted pocket square, while sporting whitish hair and a salt-and-pepper beard.

As he speaks, the visuals cut to a montage of assassins fighting in a stairwell, possibly a reaction to the theft of the unmentioned item.

‘What he took is very important to a lot of very dangerous people,’ he continues. ‘Find him, because if you don’t, I’ll bring the wait of this whole institution down on you both.’

As he dismisses Winston, Gibson also introduces the character Charon, played in the films by the late Lance Reddick, who died at home of heart disease in March of this year.

Winston is then seen driving in a car with his brother Frankie, who sports a beard and long hair.

‘You made a big mistake coming here,’ he warns Winston.

Winston’s solution is to round up a team of fellow assassins, though it’s not clear if they’re trying to get the stolen item back, or if he’s supporting his brother and going to war with Gibson’s character Cormac.

‘We have to strike first,’ he says, plunging a knife into a table, ‘And I need all the help I can get.’

As he does that, the assembled assassins pull their handguns and rifles on him.

‘How are we supposed to believe a guy in an ascot can pull this off?’ asks a man holding an assault rifle in another scene.

‘It’s a cravat,’ Winston responds dryly.

Then several assassins are quickly shown in the Continental, indicating they are people Winston and his team will have to do battle with.

After he’s injured in another battle, the future manager turns up at someone’s door and references a line from the original John Wick movies.

‘We need guns. Lots of guns,’ he says hoarsely while helping his injured colleague to stand.

‘This is more than vengeance. This is justice,’ Winston says over a final montage of fighting and violence. ‘Let’s take this house and everything that comes with it’

Coming soon: ‘And away we go,’ he adds in the final moment as he looks debonaire while raising a martini to his lips. The three-episode miniseries begins airing on September 22 on Peacock
