Bruno Fernandes reveals his transfer plan after leaving Man Utd: “I’m not saying no”

Bruno Fernandes has spoken of his desire to play in Brazil once he finishes his career at Manchester United – but he is not thinking about leaving Old Trafford soon

Bruno Fernandes has opened up the possibility of playing Brazil later in his career when he decides to leave Manchester United.

Fernandes was handed the club captaincy at Old Trafford this summer by United boss Erik ten Hag and succeeds Harry Maguire, who captained the team for three-and-a-half years. The Portuguese playmaker has starred for the Red Devils since his January 2020 switch from Sporting.

However, he has now discussed his own long-term future plans and, perhaps surprisingly, refused to rule out a future move to playing in South America. He specifically responded to playing football in Brazil – a nation which shares his native Portuguese language.

Fernandes told ESPN Brasil: “Whenever I can, I follow it, because I find Brazilian football attractive, electric football, with a lot of quality, joy, very one-on-one.

“It’s pure football. And I think that now, with the coaches that are there, not only the Portuguese, but also Brazilians, are increasingly developing in the tactical part.

“I don’t really like talking about the distant future, but it’s like I said. It’s attractive football, very interesting. The only thing is that the trips are very long there in Brazil (laughs).

“There are many competitions, many clubs that play Libertadores and Sudamericana, very good competitions. I’m not saying no, because Brazilian football is very attractive, and we never know the future.”

The 28-year-old has established himself as a leader for the club on the pitch and is a virtual ever-present in United’s starting line-up. He rarely suffers from injury or suspension, allowing him to showcase his talents and for the club to centre much of their attacking play around him.

Fernandes has scored 64 goals and 54 direct assists across 187 appearances for United and appears to have multiple more seasons still left at the top level. He will be keen to restore the club’s ascendancy both domestically and in Europe.

There is clearly no chance that Fernandes is leaving Old Trafford anytime in the near future due to his status at the club and weight in the dressing room, but do not rule out the Portuguese star plying his trade in the Brazilian top flight in the next ten years.
