Chelsea supporters believe that Nicolas Jackson should not have been denied a second goal against Brighton in the Carabao Cup. The 22-year-old striker, who joined the Blues from Villarreal in the summer, booked Mauricio Pochettino’s side a place in the fourth round, ending his four-game goal drought.

However, Jackson could have doubled his account later in tie had it not been ruled out for offside. Moises Caicedo found Cole Palmer loitering on the edge of the box and, as he was shutdown by the Seagulls’ centre-backs, he lifted the ball into the Senegal international’s path.

Jackson took one touch and beat Bart Verbruggen at his far post. The Chelsea ace wheeled away in delight, copying Cristiano Ronaldo’s infamous ‘calma’ celebration, gesturing ‘I am here’ by pointing to himself then the floor.

But, Jackson’s effort was ruled out and many Blues supporters believe that the goal would have stood had the Video Assistant Referee been in operation. VAR is not used in the Carabao Cup until the semi-final when the technology is readily available for both sides at Wembley.

Nicolas Jackson was judged to be in an offside position when he was played through by Cole Palmer

This is because not every club in the English football league has the finances – or facilities – to implement and operate VAR. So, in order to ensure that every team has a fair roll of the dice, VAR is not used at this stage in the competition.

Nevertheless, football.london has taken a look at some of the reaction to Jackson’s offside goal against Brighton. One user by the handle @FutbolCheIsea posted: “No chance this is offside. Brilliant finishing ruled out by incompetent officiating again.”

The Evening Standard’s Chelsea correspondent Nizaar Kinsella posted: “Nicolas Jackson puts the ball in the net but it is offside. VAR would have looked at that in the PL you’d think. Unlucky. Sanchez also made a good save. A tight, quality and tense game.”

@DeanCFC_ posted: “2 players playing Nicolas Jackson on in this move, shocking decision by the linesman. Thankfully this didn’t cost us but I am not sure why there is no VAR when we have the technology available?”

@CFCKaz6_ posted: “Also the Jackson goal which wasn’t offside, how on earth can you not have VAR in the last 32 of a league cup.”
