Emma Stone had a bit of an unorthodox audition to play Mia in “La La Land”

In Hollywood, any, and every, day can be an audition for your next role. This is something that Emma Stone understands after her unorthodox audition for La La Land.

On Saturday, Stone, who plays Mia in the film, took the stage with La La Land writer and director, Damien Chazelle, composer Justin Hurwitz, and singer-actor John Legend, for a panel interview at Deadline’s The Contenders event and talked all about her audition for the highly anticipated movie.

La La Land is set in Los Angeles, is a musical and also stars Ryan Gosling. With all the music and old Hollywood glam vibes, Stone fits right into the cast, so much so that her audition was a little bit unconventional and didn’t seem like a real audition at all.

Stone explained to Deadline’s Pete Hammond that both Chazelle and Hurwitz came to New York while she was doing Cabaret, but she had a cold that night as they were looking at her for the role of Mia, an aspiring actress, who falls for Gosling’s jazz piano playing character, Sebastian.

“That felt like my unofficial audition that I didn’t get to pick. ‘You came to that performance? I was on cold medicine,’” Stone joked.

Even with the cold, she landed the role and later explained that her time on Broadway was the perfect stepping stone to playing this musical character.

“It definitely helped in preparing for the role because I felt I had a certain stamina I wouldn’t have had before in any capacity,” she said.

We don’t care how Stone got her role, but we are really happy that she did, since she will be reuniting with Gosling who she’s previously shared the screen with in films like, Gangster Squad and Crazy, Stupid, Love. Plus, who doesn’t like the idea of Stone singing and dancing while falling in love in LA?
