James Gunn Ends Superman Legacy Story Following Doubts

As some fans are still questioning the choice of having multiple DC Comics superheroes in Superman: Legacy, James Gunn has a clever response to it.

James Gunn responds back to Superman: Legacy story concerns as several other heroes have joined the upcoming DC Universe movie. DC Studios are busy working on several of their upcoming Chapter 1, “Gods and Monsters” projects as Gunn and Peter Safran get their new franchise up and rolling. One of the prominent films is Superman: Legacy, with David Corenswet set to portray the latest big-screen version of the Man of Steel.

As Superman: Legacy is still in pre-production, Gunn has made several casting additions, particularly with the addition of other DC heroes being tapped for the new reboot. While many are excited, there are still fans that are doubting the story of Clark Kent’s latest cinematic adventure with so many superheroes sharing the spotlight.

Over on Threads, Gunn responded to @damiennightwing97, who can’t be convinced that the filmmaker “is not lying to fans of the DCU with SUPERMAN LEGACY about being a origin story & setting up a future new Justice League of America angle.” They go on to add, “Mr. Terrific in a Superman story? Lol don’t see it.” To that, Gunn came back with an image of Superman and Mr. Terrific from the animated Injustice movie while stating, “Now you’ve see it!”

Why Introducing Other DCU Heroes Doesn’t Have To Set Up The Justice League

As valid as many of the fan concerns are, it is important to remember that just because Hawkgirl, Mr. Terrific, Metamorpho, and Guy Gardner are appearing in Superman: Legacy, it doesn’t mean they are headlining the film. In many cases, especially in the superhero genre, some of these characters that get cast for other main heroes’ movies are there in a supporting capacity. Having a supporting role can mean having anywhere from a dozen scenes to only a handful of minutes in the actual movie.

Given how Warner Bros. handled the first Justice League movie, DC Studios is clearly not in a rush in wanting to establish the team this early, especially through Superman: Legacy. It’s worth remembering that out of all the Chapter 1, “Gods and Monsters” projects that Gunn and Safran revealed in January, there wasn’t even a Justice League project revealed, which says a lot. What Gunn is doing with these DC superheroes in Superman: Legacy is to help set up the idea that in this universe, customer crime-fighters are already established and telling it through Clark’s perspective.

Once Superman: Legacy starts filming in 2024 – assuming production doesn’t get delayed in light of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes – it will hopefully start to get clearer how these heroes factor into the story. Given that set photos and videos are bound to be taken while Superman: Legacy is filming, the world will have a better idea of what Gunn is doing with all of these characters. For now, time will tell if Superman: Legacy has other heroes left to cast or not.
