Chelsea player ratings this season – Sterling and Enzo shine, Caicedo slow

Chelsea 2023/24 Premier League player ratings – Sterling and Fernandez shine, Caicedo slow

football.london takes a look at how the Chelsea squad have performed thus far this season with a special edition of our player ratings in the first international break of 2023/24

Four games into the 2023/24 season and it has been far from an ideal start to life as Chelsea head coach for Mauricio Pochettino.

An opening weekend draw with Liverpool was followed by a 3-1 defeat to West Ham United a week later. Then the Blues did pick up their first win of the season against newly-promoted Luton Town but were brought back down to earth by Nottingham Forest, who defeated Chelsea 1-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.

Despite just four points in as many matches, there have been some positives for Pochettino to take. The players do look as if they have bought into the Argentine’s philosophy and style of play. To get them playing the way he wants will take time, though, and he has continuously called for patience.

With that said, football.london have taken a look at how each player (who has played more than 90 minutes in the Premier League) has done on an individual basis thus far this season. Let us know if you agree in the comments section below the article…

Robert Sanchez

It has not been an ideal start for Sanchez since signing for Chelsea from Brighton last month. The 25-year-old is trying to convince the Blues that he can be the club’s long-term No.1 goalkeeper but so far it has not been amazing – albeit he has had moments where you can see there is a decent shot-stopper in there.

football.london‘s rating: 5/10

Levi Colwill

We all knew Colwill would come into the Chelsea side and hit the ground running immediately – and that is what he has done. However, Colwill is being played somewhat out of position on the left-hand side of defence which almost restricts his playmaking abilities, which seems bizarre to say for a defender.

football.london‘s rating: 6/10

Axel Disasi

Disasi got off to the perfect start with a debut goal against Liverpool. There have been a few moments where he has looked a bit shaky but overall, I’d say it’s been a strong start to life at Stamford Bridge for the 25-year-old defender.

football.london‘s rating: 6/10

Thiago Silva

By no means has Silva looked at his absolute best so far this season. But there have been some moments where the Brazilian has saved Chelsea like we have become so accustomed to seeing in recent years from the 38-year-old central defender.

football.london‘s rating: 6/10

Ben Chilwell

Chilwell has been largely used out of position but has shown glimpses of what he brings to the Chelsea team in the early stages of the season. I still think Chelsea would benefit more from the England international playing in his natural left-back position.

football.london‘s rating: 6/10

Malo Gusto

Really impressive start to life at Stamford Bridge for Gusto. The 20-year-old right-back has taken no time to settle into a new country and a new football club. The injury to Reece James has benefitted Gusto personally and if he continues, he will prove to be really stern competition for the club captain when he returns to action.

football.london‘s rating: 7/10

Moises Caicedo

After signing for a record-breaking £115million last month, there was always going to be a lot of expectation placed on Caicedo’s shoulders. However, it has been a slow start to life at Chelsea for the Ecuador international, but there is every expectation that he will improve over time at the Bridge.

football.london‘s rating: 5/10

Enzo Fernandez

What more can you say about this man? Every time he graces the pitch he looks brilliant. The new advanced role really seems to suit Enzo’s style of play, perhaps even more than the deeper position we saw him in last season. That performance against Liverpool was one of the best I’ve ever seen from a central midfielder.

football.london‘s rating: 8/10

Conor Gallagher

Looks like a completely different player under Pochettino. The Argentine is using Gallagher in a slightly deeper role than what we saw last season and it looks to really suit the England international’s style of play. Long may it continue.

football.london‘s rating: 7/10

Carney Chukwuemeka

Chukwuemeka scored his first goal in a Chelsea shirt in the Blues’ defeat to West Ham United last month, but moments later he limped off the pitch and is now injured for the next few weeks. It was such a shame because before that, the England Under-20 international was really beginning to show his potential.

football.london‘s rating: 6/10

Raheem Sterling

A transformed man. Many were predicting a big season for Sterling after what was a really disappointing 2022/23 campaign. Pochettino seems to have gotten the best out of the former Manchester City winger, who now needs to maintain this form after the international break.

football.london‘s rating: 8/10

Mykhailo Mudryk

It has been a really slow start to the season for Mudryk. Yes, he has not started a game yet but his cameo performances from the bench have not justified Pochettino choosing the winger over the other options he has. Needs to improve – and fast.

football.london‘s rating: 5/10

Noni Madueke

Madueke has not been able to make the impact from the bench that he and Chelsea would have been hoping for. Saying that, he has showed glimpses of his ability from the bench but he needs to improve, something that is bound to happen as the season goes on.

football.london‘s rating: 6/10

Nicolas Jackson

Really quick to adapt to life in the Premier League. Jackson is a handful for any defence but does need to improve in front of goal. He does everything really well without scoring against Liverpool, he impresses at West Ham, he bags against Luton Town and he should have had at least one goal against Nottingham Forest. Overall, though, a really promising start for Jackson.
