£50m Chelsea player is not even close to signing a new contract

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher could leave Stamford Bridge despite wanting to stay.

That is according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

He recently stated in his column for GiveMeSport that Conor Gallagher is hoping to earn a new deal but nothing is advanced at the moment and he could still leave the club.

The 23-year-old has been a key player for Mauricio Pochettino this season, but his existing deal expires in 2025.

He has started in all 10 of Chelsea’s Premier League games so far, so it is clear to see that his manager is really happy with him at the moment.

Conor Gallagher not close to signing new contract

According to Jacobs, Chelsea would have sold Gallagher for around £50m in the last transfer window and the Englishman’s long-term future at Stamford Bridge is still uncertain as his contract runs down.

Writing for GiveMeSport, he said: “Conor Gallagher could still leave the club despite captaining the side in the absence of Reece James and Ben Chilwell. Spurs looked at Gallagher right at the end of the summer window but felt his £45-50m asking price was too high.

“Gallagher is intent to fight for his Chelsea place and earn a new deal, but nothing is advanced on that front.”

Will Conor Gallagher sign a new contract at Chelsea?

If he can maintain the form that he is in, we can see Chelsea handing him one.

In the Blues’ first 10 Premier League games this season, Gallagher has proven his worth and shown that he could be quite a useful squad player for Pochettino going forward.

For example, as per WhoScored, the England international is currently averaging the most interceptions per match in his squad (1.7). He is doing his best to try and thwart opposition attacks and that is something you want to see from one of your midfielders.

Is Gallagher good enough to start every week for Chelsea win everyone is fit? With Pochettino having the likes of Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia at his disposal, it is very debatable to say the least.

But one thing that is certain is that Gallagher has shown this season that he is at the level to be part of this Chelsea squad.
