Beef season 2 is headed to Netflix, and it could mark an on-screen reunion for Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway. According to a report from Deadline, the two actors (who previously collaborated in Brokeback Mountain and Love & Other Drugs) are being eyed to star alongside Charles Melton (May December) and Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla). There are no deals in place with any of the four actors at this time.
The upcoming season, which has already been written, will follow in its predecessor’s footsteps and will center on a feud. This time around, though, the “beef” will be between two couples (Spaeny and Melton would portray one of the couples, with Hathaway and Gyllenhaal starring as the other). A24 and Netflix expect to go into production for Season Two by late summer or fall.

Season 1 of the acclaimed Netflix and A24 anthology series starred Ali Wong and Steve Yeun as two strangers involved in a road rage incident that spirals out of control. The series won big during this awards season, winning eight Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Steven Yeun, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Wong, and Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie and Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Lee Sung Jin. Beef also earned three Golden Globe Awards, four Critics’ Choice Awards, and Screen Actors Guild Awards for Yeun and Wong.
Beef was created by Lee Sung Jin, who also executive-produced the series.
Beef Season 2 Going After Dream Cast
While Gyllenhaal, Hathaway, Spaeny, and Melton are not yet confirmed to star in the series, the idea of the four talented actors uniting on-screen – coupled with Beef‘s successful season one outing – points towards a promising sophomore season.
Gyllenhaal has done some of his best work on-screen working alongside Hathaway: earning a BAFTA and nominations for the Academy Award, Critics’ Choice, and SAG Award for Best Supporting Actor for 2005’s Brokeback Mountain, and a Golden Globe nomination for his work on 2011’s Love & Other Drugs. Gyllenhaal will next appear in Doug Liman’s Road House (a reimagining of Rowdy Herrington’s 1989 film starring Patrick Swayze). Road House will premiere at South by Southwest on March 8, before heading to Prime Video on March 21.
Besides Brokeback Mountain and Love & Other Drugs, Hathaway is known for her breakout role as the beloved Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries and performances in The Devil Wears Prada and Rachel Getting Married. She earned an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild, and a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress for Les Misérables. She will next star in The Idea of You.
While Melton and Spaeny are newcomers, the two have already impressed with roles in two of 2023’s most acclaimed films. Melton appeared in Todd Haynes’ May December, while Spaeny starred as the titular character in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla. Melton earned Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award nominations for his work in May and December. Spaeny received the Volpi Cup for Best Actress and a Golden Globe Award nod for portraying Priscilla Presley in Coppola’s biopic.
Spaeny will next appear in A24’s Civil War, premiering at South by Southwest on March 14, and later this year, the actress will star in Alien: Romulus, the latest installment in the Alien franchise.
