Emma Stone’s Divisive 2024 Black Comedy Gets VOD Release Date After Disappointing Box Office Run

Kinds of Kindness receives a VOD release date after a disappointing box office run. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, who co-wrote the script with his frequent collaborator Efthimis Filippou, Kinds of Kindness is a triptych fable following a man trying to take control of his own life, a police officer whose wife was lost and sea and has returned a different person, and a woman determined to find someone destined to become a great spiritual leader. The Kinds of Kindness cast includes Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, and Mamoudou Athie – all in multiple roles.

Now, well over a month after its theatrical release, the divisive black comedy is coming to VOD. Searchlight Pictures has announced that Kinds of Kindness will be available for purchase on digital platforms on August 27 – including Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home – and on Blu-ray and DVD on October 8. Both the digital and physical releases will include bonus content, such as a featurette titled “Takes All Kinds: The Vision of Kinds of Kindness,” in which the cast and crew provide a behind-the-scenes look at the film’s costumes, cinematography, and music, along with some deleted scenes.

The ending of Kinds of Kindness is uncomfortably funny. We break down the film’s biggest moments, including what it all means & how they’re linked.

1Why Kinds Of Kindness Underperformed Compared To Poor Things

Its Divisive Reception Explained

Kinds of Kindness marks the latest reunion between Stone and Lanthimos, who previously collaborated on The Favourite, the short film Bleat, and Poor Things. The last of which, also starring Dafoe and Qualley, was a critical and commercial success that surprisingly made over $117 million at the box office on a $35 million budget and went on to win four Academy Awards, including Stone’s second win for Best Actress. Because of this, anticipation for Lanthimos and Stone’s next collaboration, Kinds of Kindness, was high.

However, Kinds of Kindness largely underperformed compared to Poor Things. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, and though Kinds of Kindness reviews were generally positive, resulting in a 71% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film divided critics upon its festival debut with its strange storylines, even for a famously deranged director like Lanthimos. Simultaneously, its off-kilter storylines were praised by many critics who called Kinds of Kindness a frigidly cynical triptych brimming with black comedy that showcases Lanthimos at his most misanthropic and sharply comedic yet.

Though the critical response was generally positive, Kinds of Kindness really underperformed with audiences. It failed to make back its $15 million budget, grossing only $13 million at the box office, significantly less than Poor Things made the year prior. Overall, audiences didn’t connect with Kinds of Kindness quite like critics did, evidenced by its 48% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is understandable given how uncompromisingly absurdist it is.
