Brilliant Lady Who Sat Final Exams Heavily Pregnant Earns First-Class Degree and University’s Department Best Student

In a world where perseverance, determination, and resilience are celebrated, Colette Offiong Bassey stands as a shining example of these virtues. This exceptional Nigerian woman has recently etched her name in the history books by becoming the first-ever first-class graduate from the Department of Linguistics and Communication Studies at the University of Calabar (UNICAL), a feat that had eluded the department for over 44 years.

Breaking a 44-Year-Old Record While Pregnant

Colette’s journey is remarkable not only because of her academic excellence but also because of the incredible challenges she overcame. She completed her final year exams while heavily pregnant and, in her words, experienced “one hell of a ride” as she took her exams on a Wednesday and gave 𝐛𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐡 to her son that Saturday. Despite the physical and emotional strain, Colette emerged as the best student in her department, shattering a four-decade-old record.

The University of Calabar confirmed her as the first student to achieve this distinction. A statement from the institution read: “Bassey Colette Offiong emerged as the only first-class student from Linguistics and Nigerian Languages in the 2018/2019 session and the first ever in the history of the department dated back to 1977.”

A Support System Rooted in Love and Encouragement

Colette is quick to attribute her success to God and her unwavering support system, especially her husband. On social media, she expressed her gratitude, saying: “After God, my gratitude goes to my husband who pushed me hard and gave me great support. I have a great support system, the rest of my family included.”

She also emphasized the importance of faith and determination in her journey, inspiring others with her words: “It’s never too late to achieve excellence; you just have to start. Take the step, whatever it is.” Her story serves as a reminder that even when life throws curveballs, success is achievable with perseverance, focus, and the right support.

Inspiring Others to Pursue Their Dreams

In an exclusive interview, Colette reflected on the difficulties of balancing her academic ambitions with the demands of pregnancy. What kept her going, she explained, was her intense desire to succeed: “Interest, hunger! What kept me going was how bad I wanted to succeed. My millinery business had to suffer, some friendships strained, but my desire to succeed gave me a greater reason to keep pushing.”

Colette’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience. She encouraged others, particularly pregnant and nursing mothers who are students, to stay focused on their goals. “If it’s worth doing, do it well! When you want to quit, think of the success story you won’t get to tell your 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥ren and others in your sphere of influence.” She also advised them not to be afraid to ask for help in order to balance their responsibilities and pursue their dreams.

Looking Ahead: The Journey Continues

For Colette, the journey doesn’t stop here. Currently serving as the Administrative Manager at Liwo Developments Inc., she has her sights set on climbing the academic ladder. With a Master’s degree in view from Liverpool John Moores University, Colette remains committed to her professional and personal development.

Her story is an inspiring reminder that achieving greatness requires determination, faith, and an unshakable belief in one’s own potential. Colette Offiong Bassey’s achievements will continue to resonate with women around the world, especially those balancing academic and family responsibilities.

Final Thoughts: A Legacy of Excellence

Colette’s historic achievement at the University of Calabar has not only set a new standard but also serves as an encouragement to others. She has proven that excellence is possible, no matter the circumstances. Her journey is a powerful example of how resilience, determination, and support can lead to success, even when the odds seem insurmountable. As Colette herself aptly puts it: “The journey to greatness goes on.”

Her legacy will inspire future generations of students, especially women, to break barriers, set new records, and achieve excellence in all aspects of their lives.

Sbashle E. Ntuli, a remarkable young woman from South Africa, has achieved a historic milestone in her family by becoming the first-ever graduate. She earned her Bachelor of Commerce degree in Economics and Finance from the University of the Western Cape (UWC), a feat that marks a significant achievement both for her and her family.

During her time at the university, Sbashle demonstrated exceptional leadership, serving as the Deputy President of the UWC Student Representative Council (SRC) in the 2020/2021 academic year. Her leadership and dedication extended beyond academics, making a meaningful impact on her fellow students and the institution as a whole.

Celebrating her graduation on LinkedIn, Sbashle shared her joy, posting a picture of her graduation ceremony along with an inspiring caption: “Bachelor of Commerce in Economics and Finance completed! First graduate in my family!” Her post quickly gained attention from across the globe, with many congratulating her for her perseverance and dedication.

Reflecting on her journey, Sbashle expressed her pride in being the first in her family to earn a degree. “I am proud as the first-ever graduate in my family, a coloured woman, and as a black 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘥 – a product of the poor and working class.
