The makeup, hair and nail moments on celebrities that were absolute scorchers this season
We’re well into the sweltering days of summer, but these celebrities have bringing the heat all season, whether that’s a cool (literally and figuratively) crop on Lily Collins, a juicy tangerine lip on Maya Rudolph or neon nails on Selena Gomez.
PEOPLE’s style and beauty team picked some of their favorite looks on A-listers from Rihanna to Emma Stone, and included all the insider tips from their glam squad needed to try to achieve the look at home. Trust us — you’ll be hotter than ever.
01of 15Sienna Miller’s Bendy Waves
STEVE GRANITZ/FILMMAGIC
“From her tousled waves and ‘s she even wearing makeup?’ makeup to her flowy dresses and boots, Sienna Miller has been dedicated to the boho-chic aesthetic since the early aughts — and she’s still the master of it,” says style and beauty director Andrea Lavinthal. “At the L.A. premiere of Horizon: An American Saga, she wore low-key Chloé and her usual relaxed glam. And while we all know it takes effort (we’re talking an arsenal of hot tools) to achieve her effortless waves, somehow she makes us believe it just air-dried like that.”
Rihanna’s Natural Short Style
KAYLA OADDAMS/WIREIMAGE
Boiling summer temperatures and fussy humidity make a strong case for going au naturel. Which is exactly what Rihanna did when wore her natural curls, prepped and styled with Fenty Hair’s Damage Repair Treatment Bond Builder, Repair Deep Conditioner and Thickening Edge Control Gel. The look, worn to Fenty Hair’s launch party, was a favorite of editorial assistant Michelle Lee’s because of how it epitomized “natural beauty — and that shimmery highlighter..blinding!”

Think a bold blue shadow could be too over-the-top or ’80s? Joanna Simkin made the shade work for daytime with a superpigmented swipe of iridescent indigo just on Yara Shahidi’s lids, blended with more natural shades around the eye, to make the effect somehow subtle. (Yes, we just said “subtle” about blue eyeshadow.)
“Thank you for making me feel like a flower blossom,” Shahidi wrote on Instagram.
04of 15Cate Blanchett’s Glowing Skin
STEPHANE CARDINALE/CORBIS/GETTY
Cate Blanchett’s “glowy, not sweaty” skin — which is always the goal in the summer, according to deputy beauty editor Jackie Fields — was one of the highlights (pun intended) of June.
“The Giorgio Armani global brand ambassador’s pro Andrew Denton exclusively used the brand’s latest and greatest products, including its Luminous Silk Foundation (a makeup artist fave), Luminous Silk Glow Blush and Luminous Silk Glow Setting Powder (are you noticing the trend here?). A little mascara and a petal-pink lip completed her effortlessly chic vibe,” she says.
05of 15Kerry Washington’s Cute Retro Updo
PASCAL LE SEGRETAIN/GETTY
James Catalano gave Kerry Washington a modern version of a beehive to complement her ’60s-inspired Chanel skirt suit at the brand’s fashion show. In a WWD video of her getting-ready routine, Catalano can be seen teasing the “hive” with a rat tail comb to complement the look that makeup artist Kenneth Soh called “simple” and “chic.”

Makeup artist Georgie Eisdell gave Anya Taylor-Joy one showstopping red lip after another during her week at Cannes, but one particular standout was this true crimson color, worn with just clean skin and long lashes, plus the ultimate French Riviera hat worn tied around her neck. Eisdell identified the shade as Rouge Dior 999 — one of the most classic red shades of all time — teamed up with a darker lip liner.
07of 15Sabrina Carpenter’s Vintage Vibes
KRISTY SPAROW/GETTY
Sabrina Carpenter’s throwback vibe was the perfect look for the 1940s era of Vogue World: Paris, where she made her runway debut. Her hair was perfectly tousled into loose Old Hollywood-style curls — but it was her dewy pink cheeks and bold red lips, courtesy of Pat McGrath Labs, that stole the heart of style editor Hedy Phillips. Carpenter’s makeup artist used the new Dramatique Mega Lip Pencil in Garnet Glow to get that perfect cabernet-hued pout. “STUNNING SABRINA,” Pat McGrath wrote on Instagram, and we couldn’t agree more.
08of 15Selena Gomez’s Neon Nails
TOM BACHIK NAILS/INSTAGRAM
“Neon summer vibes only!” nail artist Tom Bachik declared on this photo of his longtime client Selena Gomez sporting fluorescent pink eyeshadow and highlighter green nails. Though he didn’t identify the shade she’s sporting, several Instagrams later, he posted a lookalike color — Après Nail in “Lime Pop” — which we suspect might be the same one used on Selena’s set.
09of 15Ariana DeBose’s Sleek, Pretty Pony
JENNY ANDERSON/GETTY
Ursula Stephen was responsible for the super-sleek low pony, tied with a bow, worn by Ariana DeBose to the Tonys. Creaseless styling clips and a Fenty Hair 3-in-1 edge styling tool (as seen in makeup artist Vincent Oquendo’s behind-the-scenes video) helped achieve the flyaway-free look.
10of 15Lily Collins’ Surprise Chop
GILBERT FLORES/VARIETY VIA GETTY
Does anything scream “summer” more than getting fed up with your super-long locks and marching to the salon to chop it all off? Lily Collins decided she wanted to “change things up and surprise myself” ahead of the premiere of MaXXXine, so she and hairstylist Gregory Russell landed on this chin-length cut — and Collins even made the first snip.
11of 15Tyla’s Sultry Shadow
AARON J. THORNTON/GETTY
The temperature is heating up — why shouldn’t your nighttime beauty looks do the same? The star was seriously smoldering at the BET Awards in a look created by Matthew Fishman that used Charlotte Tilbury products for a dewy face, glossy lip and exaggerated cat eye courtesy of the brand’s Super Nudes Easy Eye Palette, Feline Flick in “Panther” and Pillow Talk Push Up Lashes! mascara.
12of 15Maya Rudolph’s Light Foundation and Bright Lip
DIMITRIOS KAMBOURIS/GETTY
Though the Time 100 gala was an evening event, Daniel Martin gave Maya Rudolph a beauty look that just screams sunny summer afternoon, from her glowy complexion that highlights her famous freckles, to her sunkissed cheek color, to the hot coral lip that gives “just ate a popsicle” vibes. (On Instagram, he shared that it’s a Make Up Forever Shade called “Saucy Tangerine.”) Executive editor Alex Apatoff will be working overtime trying to find this exact balance of coverage and fresh-facedness for her next summer night out.
13of 15Emma Stone’s Blooming Blush
TODD OWYOUNG/NBC VIA GETTY
This rosy, romantic look, worn by Emma Stone to The Tonight Show with JImmy Fallon, was a favorite of writer/reporter Catherine Santino.
“As a recovering victim of the 2016 no-blush trend, I have a newfound appreciation for a pop of color on the cheeks,” she says. “I love that Emma’s rosy pink blush complements her skin tone and ties into her lip color — it just gives her that youthful, radiant look.”
14of 15Gabrielle Union’s Pearlescent Polish
DIMITRIOS KAMBOURIS/GETTY; INSET: THUY NGUYEN/INSTAGRAM
Nail pro Thuy Nguyen wanted to create a manicure for Gabrielle Union at the Met Gala that would complement the star’s mermaid-esque Michael Kors Collection dress, and, Nguyen wrote on Instagram, “give her nails the right amount of sparkle [they] needed to bring the look all together.”
She accomplished the iridescent finish with the Sally Hansen shade “Bare Kiss” with the “Unicorn Transparent” top coat to finish.
